Exporting a page as an image changes what remains editable

A JPG is a rendered snapshot of a PDF page. Text, links, form controls, layers and vector shapes become pixels in the exported image.

Use images for preview and sharing

JPG works well for thumbnails, slide imports, social previews and systems that do not accept PDF. Choose PNG when tiny text, diagrams or sharp interface elements matter more than file size. Neither format preserves searchable text from the source document.

Select enough resolution

Higher scale improves small text but increases memory use and download size. Inspect one representative page before exporting a long document. If the goal is OCR, render clearly enough that letter shapes remain distinct; heavy JPG compression can turn punctuation and fine strokes into noise.

Respect document restrictions

Converting a page to an image makes it universally viewable and permanently unsearchable. Both halves of that matter.

The text stops being text

A rendered page is pixels. Nobody can select, search or copy from it, and neither can a screen reader. That is useful when you want a page that cannot be casually edited, and a problem if anyone downstream needs the content. To go the other way, OCR recovers a text layer from an image.

Resolution is the whole quality decision

Screen viewing is comfortable around 150 DPI. Print wants 300 DPI. Going higher multiplies file size without visible benefit on screen, and going lower makes small type mushy — text suffers from under-resolution far more than photographs do.

JPG for photos, PNG for text and diagrams
