How to convert a screenshot to Excel
Four steps, about two minutes, and nothing leaves your device at any point.
- Select your screenshot. Drag the image onto the upload box above, or click it to browse. The file is read directly by this page, so there is no upload to wait through and no copy of your data on anyone’s server.
- Let the recognition run. Text extraction starts by itself and reports progress as it goes. The first run is slower than the rest because it downloads the recognition engine and its English training data; after that they are cached.
- Check and correct the table. The recognised rows land in the editor and the live preview underneath shows the finished sheet. Fix any misread characters directly, and change the delimiter if a column split in the wrong place.
- Download the .xlsx file. Name the worksheet and the file, then press Download Excel. You get a real workbook that opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers — or take the plain CSV instead.
Get a better result from the capture itself
Recognition quality is decided before the image ever reaches this page. Three habits do most of the work:
- Capture big, not small. Zoom the page or document until the table nearly fills the screen, then capture. Character height is what recognition depends on, and it is the one thing entirely within your control.
- Keep it PNG. Screen capture tools default to PNG, which is lossless. A JPG that has been re-saved a few times — forwarded through a chat app, for instance — has soft, smeared letter edges that cost accuracy.
- Crop to the table. Surrounding menus, sidebars and page furniture add words that are not part of your data. Cropping to just the table before you convert is the single biggest accuracy improvement after resolution.
When you'd use this
- Invoices and receipts. Line items and totals from a supplier portal that offers a view but no export, pulled into a sheet for expense tracking.
- Bank and card statements. Online banking that shows transactions on screen and offers a PDF at best. Capture the table, convert, and reconcile in a spreadsheet.
- Reports and dashboards. Analytics and BI tools frequently render a table with no download button. A screen capture recovers the numbers.
- Data trapped in images. A table pasted into a chat, embedded as a picture in a slide deck, or shipped inside a PDF that turned out to be a scan.
- Sensitive data you must not upload. Payroll, patient identifiers, customer lists. A screenshot-to-spreadsheet service that processes your image on its own servers is a data transfer; this one is not.

Honest limits
- Recognition uses English training data. Other Latin-script languages are often partly readable, but accented characters and non-Latin scripts are not reliable.
- Merged cells, cells whose text wraps onto two lines, and borderless layouts with tight columns usually need a manual fix in the editor.
- Only the values convert. Colours, fonts, borders, conditional formatting and formulas from the original are not reproduced.
- Processing is local, so a very large capture on an older phone can be slow. A desktop browser handles big images more comfortably.
- Always read the preview before you rely on the numbers. This tool saves you the typing; it does not remove the need to check.

That is exactly what it is for. The recognition engine returns a bounding box for every word it finds; the tool then groups words into rows by their vertical position and splits each row into columns wherever there is a wide enough horizontal gap. Clean screen captures of on-screen tables are the best case for that approach, because the glyphs are sharp and the columns are already aligned.
The screenshot is never uploaded. It is read from your device into browser memory and passed to a recognition engine running in the same page, and the spreadsheet is assembled there too. Closing the tab clears everything. The engine itself is a JavaScript library (Tesseract.js) fetched from a public CDN, and it downloads English training data the first time you use it — those requests carry no part of your image. Any still image your browser can decode: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. PNG is what Windows, macOS, iOS and Android all produce by default when you take a screen capture, so in practice you can use whatever your screenshot key gave you. A PDF is not an image — convert the page with PDF to JPG first, or use OCR if you only need the words rather than the table.
No. There is no extension, no desktop app and no add-in. The page you are on is the whole tool, which also means it works on a locked-down work computer where you cannot install software.
On Windows, Win + Shift + S opens the snipping overlay; drag a box around the table. On macOS, Cmd + Shift + 4 does the same. On iPhone and Android, take a normal screenshot and crop it. Capture at the largest zoom level that still fits the whole table on screen — more pixels per character is the single biggest thing you control.
Three causes account for almost all of it. Small text: if the characters are under roughly ten pixels tall, zoom in before capturing. Compression: a JPG screenshot re-saved a few times smears letter edges, so prefer PNG. Tight columns: when columns nearly touch, the gap detector merges them — widen the columns on screen before capturing, or split the cell in the editor afterwards. OCR also confuses 0/O, 1/l/I, 5/S and 8/B more than anything else, which is why the editable preview exists.
